Predict Baby's Gender - Truths And Myths

You are thinking about having a baby and perhaps you are wondering if it is possible to purposely have a boy or a girl. Maybe you have other children of the same sex and want something different this time. Or, maybe there are medical reasons for opting to have your new baby be a certain sex. Yes, it is sometimes possible to predict baby’s gender and avoid some of old wives tales associated with the process.

There are some predictors that you can look at when predicting your baby’s sex. Although they aren’t foolproof, they do add a level of encouragement for expectant parents who have their hearts set on having a boy or a girl. They are predictors only and do not guarantee that you will get what you wish for!

• The baby’s heartbeat determines if it is a boy or a girl. It hasn’t been medically proven that a slower heartbeat (less than 140 beats per minute) indicates that  you’re carrying a boy while a faster heartbeat means a girl is on the way.
• Girls are carried higher than boys. Some people are convinced that the lower a baby is carried, the more likely it is a boy. This is simply a myth and the sex of  your baby has nothing to do with where or how it is carried.
• Morning sickness is more prevalent when you’re having a girl. According to some research studies done in Switzerland, you can predict baby’s gender if you have severe morning sickness. The Swiss studies found that there is a slight chance that carrying girls results in more feelings of wooziness in the morning.
• Boy babies tend to be more active when in the womb. The mother’s daily activities generally indicate how she perceives her baby’s kicking and stretching. The more active mom is, the less she is apt to feel the intrauterine activity of her baby.
• Food cravings can indicate whether to “think  pink” or “plan for blue”. It is not true that salt cravings are indications that your new little bundle of joy is a boy. And, craving sweets doesn’t necessarily mean that your baby will be a baseball player with ponytails!
• The Chinese conception chart can be used to predict my baby’s sex. This unreliable and unproven chart uses your age and when you conceived the baby to determine it’s sex.

It is apparent that once you have conceived, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to predict baby’s gender by depending on any of the above old wives tales. The only dependable way to know your baby’s sex is by having an ultrasound and even this isn’t foolproof!

So if these myths are consistently off the mark, why do we keep turning to them again and again? According to the experts, there are two factors at work: the fact that you’ve got a 50/50 chance of being right each time you predict your baby’s sex and the fact that you’re more likely to remember your successes than your failures! Their advice? If one of these “tests” convinces you to load up on pink frilly dresses, be sure to keep the receipt!
